Temporary Pad Surface Installed for Iconic Sail GP Event

The Challenge

The SailGP is an adrenaline-fueled racing event with eight teams going head-to-head in iconic venues across the globe for a winner-takes-all $1 million prize.

The third round of this iconic event took place in Plymouth on 17th and 18th July 2021, and we were approached by one of our longstanding contacts within the events industry, to quote for the supply and installation of a 7500sqm temporary pad surface for the unloading of catamarans.

This was a significant and challenging request as the boats can be up to 24m high and worth up to $10m!

The Solution

Following a site survey, we determined that we would need to install over 1000 panels over a single weekend, two weeks prior to the event.

In addition, we had to develop a solution that would stop any disturbance that could be caused by traffic on the trackway whilst the engineers worked on the boats. We devised a system that involved creating a pad within the larger pad area, but not connected to it, for the boats to sit on. This ensured that any large machinery moving on the larger outer pad would not move the inner engineer’s area. We then used our robust cloaking mats to cover where the two pads meet.

Our team was lucky enough to witness a crane moving the Team USA catamaran into place, which was a sight to behold. It was great to see the hustle and bustle of race day, as our expertly installed trackway solution stood up to the task at hand.
